I've taken on another apprentice this summer. This time, I have an American apprentice from our local Catholic school. It works out nicely between apprentice/interns from the Philippines and the U.S.. Philippine students have their summer vacation from April-June. U.S. students have their summer vacation from June - August. This means if I line it up correctly, I can have young minds putting hours and hours into building out and enhancing the ideas I have for my future company. I'd have to go back and count the hours on the status reports. I believe this year alone my interns have but collectively more than 500 hours into it. Granted, a lot of this was basic learning what to do. However, my nephew who is in his 2nd year of internship has honed his skill rather nicely.
I have high hopes to continue his example on to others. This year, we took on an additional Philippine intern and got several websites that we are using developed out of his efforts. My new American intern from our local Catholic school is much younger but has already started taking on her first project. I have several objectives in training her. 1) To introduce possibly enhance Drupal website development as a part of the curriculum or after school club in our local Catholic school By training one member of the school, perhaps I can plant the seed. 2) Develop the process of taking for the American part of my intern/apprenticeship program.
I will try to develop this program in the coming years. Right now, I am only having them work on personal projects but I believe I can find enough paid projects for my internship program to at least fund itself. My further hope is to eventually find some opportunity to profit through paid projects or web communities that make money through advertising. Developing the talent in these young minds is something I take personal satisfaction in and any additional gains will be icing on the cake.
