Here's an area at work I am working on now. I find it interesting. When you're in startup mode, each team tries to build systems with loose knowledge of what everyone else is doing. Incorrect assumptions are patched. Eventually, you have a working yet inefficient system.
Information Governance is implemented when you are more mature. However, there is something to be said about doing this up front. This way, you grow slower at first but you have the right mind set to build on. Information Governance is about everyone understanding the business rules and design of information passed internally and externally. Effort is placed in setting up organizational and systematic structures that support a clear understanding of the pedigree of information throughout the enterprise.
Sounds a little high falutin until you experience first hand an environment where this is not implemented. You get into situations where it's hard to report on things that actually matter... things that affect the bottom line of the business.
Know the data. This was one of the principles my mentors gave me.
