2004-07-29 Every System Must Be Smarter

We need to promote a culture of computer scientists who strive to make all systems smarter. There are evil forces out there who take advantage of among other things, our weakness in information systems.
When I was around 13 or 14, I could go to any number of BBSes (bulletin board systems) and read plans on how to infiltrate the phone system or even make bombs. Now that we have the internet, a wide open world wide information dispenser, I can only imaging what any malficent has access to.

We need to make our financial and accounting systems stronger so terrorists can not ciphon money into the hands of those who would do harm to us. We need also to take care of as the group Black Eyed Peas calls "Terrorists living here in the U.S.A". These include those who bleed our Government of money that could be used more wisely or efficiently. I'm talking about $200 hammers and $300 toilet seats. I'm talking about billion dollar military information systems (computer aided logistics projects) that do not deliver on their promise.

I believe there are counter forces out there that give us the tools, money, and feed our imagination to make things better. Open source coding, Java, XML, Web Services etc are providing people with broader reaching standard development platforms. Commercial companies have developed data mining techniques and fraud detection systems that work. Since 9/11, there is a good amount of money now appropriated and focused on making systems secure. Tech magazines like Wired display futurisic ideas like relying on power generated from all of the exercise gyms throughout our country.

I've been searching for a foci to steer a platform for Cognitive Metaphors to stand on. I believe we are lacking a well defined culture, an honor code, for computer scientists to live by. We have tools and money and imagination but we are in need of more direction and leadership.

I took this off a google search on "Honor Code"...

"An honor code establishes a fundamental social contract within which the university community agrees to live. This contract relies on the conviction that the personal and academic integrity of each individual member strengthens and improves the quality of life for the entire academic community."

An idea for an argument I want to develop....

             MONEY = ENERGY

             Inefficient Financial Systems Use Money Inefficiently

            We must sunset inefficient systems and replace them with efficient ones.

             We are a society reliant on energy but one who uses it inefficiently because we are spoiled.

             We must promote a culture / breed of computer scientists who address this problem.

             It will take time and trying to expect too much , too fast could destroy us.

             A long term view of making things better day by day fits our human nature.

             We are not machines but in time, we can make systems that serve our needs and use our limited resources more wisely.

             This is the only way we can compete and remain a leader among nations.
