I'm back developing my Nostalgia project. I've got a working environment on my laptop that I can compile and move directly to the website.
Wired Magazine had an article the other month about emerging photo management technologies. I believe the base of code I have will meet the part of the need. Nostalgia will be a photo management engine suitable for supporting social networks.
My friend James Cheung and I have been meeting once a week. We plan to hack away at the problem til year end. We'll spend the first quarter of 2005 getting out a version we can release on sourceforge.net. From there, we hope to get a lot of eyeballs on the project testing it out and contributing ideas and development.
Speaking of eyeballs.... I did something geeky yesterday. I went to my link for Cathedral and the Bazaar and downloaded the audio version of Eric Raymonds book. It was a 40 minute monologue from Raymond highlighting the main bulletpoints. It became clear from this that I need to get only a promising version of this package out there and then coordinate the effort and roll in my development and other peoples contributions.
Nostalgia will be a social experiment. It will be a conscious effort to follow the Bazaar model. Check out the Nostalgia link in the My Links section.
2005 is going to be a year where I enter the world and culture of open source development as a participant. The goal is to gain fame and add to the story of my career. The fame / ego boost is what you are driving for. Money is intangible and might come from opportunities created by the community you invent. Build a community, network with the people in the community, and may be presented with chances. After all, you will definately be the most popular person in a community based on an idea born by you.
