One of my favorite English classes at Rutgers was with Professor Wasserman. What I remember even today was reading a story called Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Professor Wasserman taught us how to pay attention to the rhythm of the words and in doing so, we could know the intent or motivation of the character speaking. I have since found this technique useful in reading people in my professional life.
On the other side, it's important to understand through everything you put out what your voice is speaking to other people. For my part, I have tried to be consistently helpful and ask thorough questions to produce high quality solutions. However, I've also showed a heated temper when people place burden on me by asking questions without doing their own analysis.
Voice is something I want to explore in this blog. Steven Covey has come out with a new book, The 8th Habit. I just started reading it. He's saying things in the book about voice that I've found true in my own experience.
