2005-01-26 Embracing my right-brainedness

Awesome! Wired magazine's lastest article talks about how we must shift towards Right-Brain functions because Asia, Automation, and Abundance are making Left-Brain work a commodity.

I write with my left hand. In scientific terms, this means I favor the use of the right side of my brain. I've seen it manifest itself in many of the paths I've taken in life. I realized I was more passionate about an English degree than my Comp Sci degree. I've found solace in filling this website with my ideas and working a whole-system type projects.

I was once labeled in school as the absent minded professor type. Now, things like this article are validating that there is a place for people like me.

One small move I am hoping to make in the coming month is this... I have a few projects I've been bringing a long on the side. I'd like to hire a kid out of high school to work on completing them. Let the kid under my mentorship develop his Left-Brained skills of programming and at the same time learn where right brained thinking contributes to building whole, well thought out systems... a term I like to refer to as a "Cognitive Metaphor".

This will be my process. I've got 2 hundred shares of stock I bought at $6 a share more than a year back. I'll use that money to fund this what in itself will be yet another small project - training the youth. Everything like this I do must feed into my goals for this "To Be Delivered" company. The training of someone who has some experience but is basically green will help me build a platform for training young Filipino knowledge workers. Once of my goals is to build an overseas company but with a defined culture. Maybe it's the outsourcing provider of Filipino knowledge workers famous for producing several popular open source packages.

I'm excited because as my ancestors in the Philippines have proved - Knowledge is power and it takes relatively little capital - capital is the lubrication for generating a knowledge machine - to produce knowledge and therefore, power.

The next exercise I must take is to take all of the blogs from the past year and produce a business plan and marketing plan for such a company. Once I have solid, official documentation and done the research for procuring knowledge workers in the Philippines, I might try living in the Philippines for a year and trying to implement the plan.

In under 2 years, I'll be fully vested in what has turned out to be valuable stock in the company I work for assuming the stock price stays where it is or increases. I need now to keep my head down and make the company successful when it is in my power to do so. On the home front, I must spend the time designing the plan for what to do with the money I get when the shares are sold. I need to build something to sustain myself and my family because as I said in my previous blog ... I only have about 30 more years to be part of the solution.
