2005-08-17 Choosing A Market

Here's the customer profile I want to go after.

Small business owner who has established a business that has survived or needs just a push to survive. The economics say that these small businesses don't have the cash to pay a high priced consultant. To recitify this, I would take a hit on custom developing the first few small projects myself and then develop a system for training a small team in the Philippines to replicate the work for futher projects. This way, I could afford to provide custom software for just a little more than a Microsoft Office package at full price. The key is to propose small projects that hit a return on investment target. The projects should show we've taken the time to understand the small business and that we've given them a system that does something that they couldn't do on their own.

What I get in return for my up front labor is the experience I need to build a company culture around a specific problem set - helping small businesses build small projects that help formalize and improve how their business works and makes it easier to franchise or exit and sell of their business cleanly.

As my friend Martin said, the big guys won't touch a company like what I have in mind but smaller companies and consultancies may comission us to have the extra capacity. This unstructured blog text is beginning to flow into a more formal business plan document that I will share here in my links. My web site will start to change to reflect this new business plan.
