2005-08-28 Experiments In Serendipity

Though I'm a pretty standard Catholic American, I was influenced by a very non-Catholic book when I was younger called The Celestine Prophecy. Many of the ideas behind the book are just a google search away. However, one of the ideas behind the book is that we are all spirits walking around the Earth and that kindred spirits will eventually be drawn to one another.

I believe that by putting yourself out there, working on the story that is you, that you will attract friends who are in similar agreement. You will attract people who care about you and want to see you do well and you in turn for them. Maybe all your friends meet your other friends and they in turn become friends. It takes a while but this type of network is very important to have. Not that you would now directly try to gain financially by selling your friends stuff or anything. I think having a strong net of friends raises that chances for serindipity. Maybe a friend of a friend loses a job and you have a job that is in your company that his profile can fill. It's happened to me more than once. I have been the giver and the recipient.

Also, each one of the friends I have knows a little but about something I don't know. Maybe certain things they are more concerned or passionate about because this thing is something they needed to study extensively. For instance, some of my friends are really good about project management or company politics. Other friends know about software sales. Others are very well rounded at the tail end of their careers or the peak, Mentors about. Chances for unforced opportunities, serendipity does to. And it's a joy to see when it works and to know it's not chance but rather creating a culture that yields opportunities you only need to be alert and imaginative enough to recognize.
