2006-03-18 Manager at an E-Commerce Company

My loyal readers, Martin and sometimes Pete -

This was a week that brought me pretty close to my limits. Martin knows what I'm talking about. I lost 10 lbs in the past 2 weeks working on a way to win a job as Manager of Reporting and Analytics in my current company. I built a presentation on my approach, I reached out to people I'd worked with, especially 1 VP who was the CIO when I was hired. I went through a battery of interviews that included 2 VPs from the business side, 1 VP from the Tech side, 1 Director from the Tech Side, 1 Director from the Business Side. I tried the ideas on my presentation out on them and they in turn gave me the picture at their level. I was sent to a 2 day communications course in that same time.

In the end, it took my manager (also a Director) to stick his neck out to get me the job. At least that's what he said.

I'll have a lot more content to write on this blog going forward. I had written a fascinating blog about my personal telecommunications strategy - how I was going to go from $200 a month to less with more capability. I will have to re-write that one because I accidentally didn't save it. I'm going to roll this blog up and start a new one. I'm going to save the text files so I can review them and maybe compile them into a book.

I'm moving my website to a new provider called TextDrive. They are the official ISP for the Ruby on Rails (a programming language) movement. I am just starting out but already hooked. It's simpler than Java, theirs a lot of shortcuts for web development, it's object oriented. The tutorial I read so far built a whole database app with literally 4 or 5 lines of code.

I'm also moving into using a content management system called Joomla. This way, I can manage and add content to different parts of my site. Going to layout the plan for this in the next few months.
