I installed Unbuntu on 2 of my machines. This linux distro is something special. Unlike the last distro I purchased from CheapBytes.com, this one I just downloaded and installed. Figuring out which ones of my partitions to eliminate/write over was a little challenging but it got done. I now have a linux/win xp laptop and a lunux/win xp server that I feel good about using for development alongside my iMac with OS X Tiger.
I have Ruby on Rails on my laptop and have already started developing an app. I have a data model and am building one iteration of functionality at a time. I like the way rails gives you a place for everything and enforces separation of view from the model from the controller. Like object orientation before it, I am encouraged by a development methodology that formalizes where I need to put everything. Development is more straight forward to me.
I had recently finished Freakonomics and I'm now reading The World Is Flat. I'm 1/3 through the book and a lot of ideas are running into my head as I read. I'm happy with where I am at this point in time. I'm working on newer technologies and building solutions on top of them. I've been part of a large scale ecommerce company and I've seen all the wharts. Now, I have enough of a financial buffer to make commentary about those warts I saw in the form of whartless smalll projects that have the potential of growing with stability, scalability, extensibility. It's relaxing writing code that you believe in.
