Before the end of March, I begin to take inventory of the web site projects I've built on the side. At this time each year, I have to consider how to take these sites to the next level when I have the extra help the interns can provide. Though I have the abilities to do these things myself, I don't have the time. Five or more interns provide fresh perspectives, energy, time to learn, and the brute force to make progress towards your goals.
By 2009, I had several sites that were tracking alright on Google searches. My sites had Google Analytics with 1 year or more of web traffic history. They were presentable and did a good job of getting my message across. In early March, I invested a few vacation days to go to the Drupalcon conference in Washington, D.C. This was an eye opener that offered a number of leading edge ideas for what folks were doing on their professional projects. It's useful to go to these things and also to join online groups that are talking about what other people are doing.
Things to consider:
- Ask yourself if you want to do a bunch of little things on a lot of sites or
- Do you want to focus on a smaller number of sites and get them further along
- You can always take features built for one site and propagate them to another if there is properly documented steps on how to do it from your interns.
