Organic Groups

Organic Groups

drupal.org describes Organic Groups (OG):

"Enable users to create and manage their own 'groups'. Each group can have subscribers, and maintains a group home page where subscribers communicate amongst themselves."

In the Conshohocken Catholic Site, the module OG is used for creating a page for each class. With the use of other modules that can be ported to OG, different functions for a class can be utilized.

Creating a new class

  1. Using the Content Construction Kit (CCK) module, a new node has been created called Class for the creation of pages for each class.
  2. In the navigation menu on the left sidebar, go to Create Content. Then choose Class.
  3. Fill in the necessary information.
  4. Click "Save".

Creating an event for a class

  1. In the navigation menu on the left sidebar, go to Create Content. Than choose Event.
  2. Fill in the necessary information.
  3. If it the event is meant for a particular class only, tick the check box near the name of the class under the option Groups.
  4. Click "Save".

Here is a sample of a created event. To see the calendar for a certain class, click on the link "<name of class> calendar". (See image below.)

Creating a wiki for a class

As defined by Wikipedia, a wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content. The wiki is very much useful if students and teachers in a class would like to do an online collaboration (e.g. notes, discussions).

  1. In the navigation menu on the left sidebar, go to Create Content. Than choose Wiki.
  2. Fill in the necessary information.
  3. If it the event is meant for a particular class only, tick the check box near the name of the class under the option Groups.
  4. Click "Save".

The page of each class is updated every time a new content has been made for that particular class. Considering that we have created a class called "Class A" and have created a wikj and an event for that particular class, it would look like this:
